Mary Flower
We'll end the season with someone we've wanted to
have on the show for quite a while now.
Mary Flower plays acoustic blues and good time music
with energy and style. Her show will be a mixture of
great tunes from between the world wars and modern songs,
some of them her own. A great end to a super summer. |
July 1998 |
26-July-1998 |
Mark Rust
Mark Rust has been a Bound for Glory favorite for most of two decades.
His straight forward songs are charming, and his stories are hilarious.
Mark's Bound for Glory performances have consistently
been high points for the show over many years and many miles. |
|
19-July-1998 |
Tania Opland and Mike Freeman
Tania and Mike are the world's only
"Anglo-Alaskan, multi-instrumental, cross-cultural, poly-rhythmic duo."
That means that they do traditionally oriented folk
music with many a twist. They've been to Ithaca twice before,
but this is their first Bound for Glory appearance.
A remarkable duo. |
|
12-July-1998 |
Maria Sangiolo
Maria is one of the best of the contemporary acoustic
singer-songwriters, with a gorgeous voice and the
ability to write songs about all sorts of people and times.
This is her second Bound for Glory visit, and we're very much
looking forward to having her back on the show. |
|
05-July-1998 |
Ned Lucas
It'll be the third time around on Bound for Glory for Ned Lucas.
Ned's roots are clearly in the blues, both old and new, but
he's also clearly listened to Woody Guthrie and a lot of traditional
folk, so his homemade songs are straightforward, simple, and strong.
Good stuff, and a fine end to a holiday weekend. |
June 1998 |
28-June-1998 |
Simple Gifts
We begin our season with this wonderful all-women's
string band from Pennsylvania. Simple Gifts plays tunes from
Ireland and America, and then will surprise us with Klezmer tunes and
Balkan dances, played on a vast array of instruments.
An unusual start to our summer. |
May 1998 |
03-May-1998 |
Garnet Rogers
We will end our season in the best possible way,
with Ontario's Garnet Rogers - a powerful, intense
singer and songwriter, making his third solo Bound for Glory visit.
Few performers anywhere can match Garnet's ability to
grab and hold the audience's attention.
A fitting conclusion to a superb Spring season. |
April 1998 |
26-April-1998 |
Penny Lang
Penny Lang comes to us from Montreal.
She's a strong woman with a bluesy angle to her music
and a political bent to her lyrics.
And she's a lot of fun.
Penny Lang has been on the circuit for many years
and will give a powerful performance.
Welcome her for her Bound for Glory debut. |
|
19-April-1998 |
Cam Waters
Minnesota's Cam Waters returns to Bound for Glory after an absence
of several years. The last time he appeared he surprised
us all with delightful homemade songs full of
ragtime and folk references. Cam Waters is a yarn spinner
of the first order, and a quiet delight. |
|
12-April-1998 |
Walt Koken
Old time banjo fans will be in heaven on Easter Sunday,
as Walt Koken makes his first ever solo Bound for Glory appearance.
Long time Central New Yorkers will remember Walt Koken
from the Highwoods String Band.
He's releasing his third solo banjo album this spring, and we'll
all enjoy his fine old time frailing, singing, and good humor. |
|
05-April-1998 |
Suzzy Roche
Yes, Suzzy Roche is one of the infamous Roches, three
sisters who took the acoustic music world by storm.
For the present, the Roches are on sabbatical, and Suzzy
has gone on the road solo, with an impressive new album
and many stories to tell.
This Bound for Glory debut will be a special experience. |
March 1998 |
29-March-1998 |
Lee Murdock
Lee Murdock returns to Bound for Glory with songs and
stories of the Great Lakes.
Lee started out with traditional songs of the lakes,
and whenever he heard a good story, wrote it into a song.
Shipwrecks and victories, heroes and losers are all in Lee's songs.
Glad to have him back on the show. |

from the Bahamas. |
|
18-January-1998 |
Bill Staines
We start our 1998 season in the finest style with
one of our oldest friends, Bill Staines.

23-November-1997 |
Mike Agranoff
When the annals of 20th century American folk music are written,
there will be a long, wild footnote about Mike Agranoff,
storyteller, humorist, imaginative guitarist, and traditionally
oriented folksinger.
Mike performs everything from beautiful traditional ballads
and gospel songs to terrible, pun-filled parodies.
Not to be missed. |
|
16-November-1997 |
Heidi Muller
Welcome back this charming folksinger and songwriter from Seattle.
Heidi did a wonderful, gentle Bound for Glory show last winter,
and it's a pleasure to have her back.
She's got a gorgeous voice and is a magical performer on both
mountain dulcimer and guitar.
Traditional and contemporary folk. |
|
09-November-1997 |
Cosy Sheridan
It'll be the second Bound for Glory appearance for this
outstanding contemporary acoustic singer-songwriter, a woman
with a wicked sense of humor, who can switch from ragtime to
deepest sentiment in the blink of an eye.
An outstanding performer, Cosy comes to us from Moab, Utah. |
|
02-November-1997 |
Cormac McCarthy
When we think about the many performers we'd like to have back
on Bound for Glory, Cormac McCarthy is on almost everyone's list.
This singer-songwriter and yarn spinner sings of the gritty side of
his beloved New England. His wry good humor makes him a fascinating
performer. |
October 1997 |
26-October-1997 |
Andrew Roblin
A solo appearance from a fellow who usually fronts the
bluegrass band The Pocono Mountain Men.
Andrew Roblin plays and sings music with an American
(and Canadian!) traditional flavor.
He originally hails from Manitoba, and there's a lot of the
Canadian prairies in his high energy music. |
|
19-October-1997 |
The Five Chinese Brothers, and David Hamburger
A wild evening.... Well, there really are only four of them,
and they're not brothers, and they're not Chinese, but other
than that, they're lots of fun, with songs both serious and zany.
David Hamburger, the King of the Brooklyn Delta, is one of the
Five Chinese Brothers, and he'll do part of the show solo. |

James Mee is one of the best contemporary acoustic
singer-songwriters in the country, with a growing reputation
and a lot of magic.
His unusual songs tell great stories. We've been trying to get
this show to happen for several years, now, and it'll be a pleasure
to have him on WVBR's Bound for Glory.
|
September 1997 |
28-September-1997 |
The Kennedys
Pete and Maura Kennedy have a very distinct and surprising sound,
reminding you of...the early Byrds!
Their strong songs and close harmonies serve them well,
and this show will be a delight all. Don't miss them.
|
|
21-September-1997 |
Four Shillings Short
Four Shillings Short is an off-the-wall neo-celtic duo from
San Francisco. Come hear them as they stretch the boundaries
of folk music in unexpected directions.
Have you ever heard an Irish tune played on a sitar?
|
|
14-September-1997 |
Y'ALL
They call their music "Old Time Country Music for the 21st Century".
Y'ALL hearkens back to country groups of the 1930's and 40's,
with wacky humor and wonderful harmonies. But there's a twist.
This show is a real gender-bender.
Y'ALL will be a quartet for this show.
|
|
07-September-1997 |
David Massengill
David Massengill is a contemporary songwriter whose music has deep
roots in his childhood home of Bristol, Tennessee.
He performs on mountain dulcimer and guitar, and tells stories with
wonderful good humor. One of the best shows of this or any year.

31-August-1997 |
Guy Davis
What a great start to Bound for Glory's 31st year.
Welcome Guy Davis, ragtime and blues guitarist, songwriter in an old
tradition.
One of the very few African-Americans playing traditional and
traditionally flavored music. And he's an incredible performer.
