The timeless, compelling quality of rural life imbues the work of this fine Maine songwriter. Although his music grows from specific places and people, it has universal meaning. "He simply sings about angels and backaches, falling stars and fear, dancing and death, and things that comfort and confound us, with a warm, friendly baritone deserving of our attention," writes the Associated Press.

The author of Garden Song ("Inch by inch..."), a folk anthem taught to millions by luminaries such as Pete Seeger, Arlo Guthrie, and the Muppets, David Mallett has penned many other gems of songs, more deeply dug. Maine can probably boast more rock-solid folk song writers per capita than most other states, and David Mallett stands with the best. The Bangor Daily News put him in company with Marshall Dodge, Andrew Wyeth, E. B. White as "Most Memorable Mainers of the 20th century."

His roots are Nova Scotian, and he gives audiences a taste of them as well. Quietly charismatic, he tells the true tale of workers in factories and fields, of preserving land and community, of rage and love, despair and courage.

Raised in a small town by a musical family, David Mallett began singing at grange halls and country fairs at the age of 10. In the decades since, he has earned accolades while touring the US, Canada, and Europe. In 2003, he won FOLKWAX's Artist of the Year and Album of the Year for Artist in Me, and his live 2006 recording, Midnight on the Water, is stunning. His mastery of word, voice, and guitar reflect soul-wisdom from long travels and love of home. "Mallett ... always has something worthwhile to say," says Sing Out! The New York Times opines, "He harks back to the earnest ambitions and heartfelt melodies of Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash, singing with the conviction that folk can still be heroic."

The Cornell Folk Song Society has been lucky to book David Mallett twice before, but his last Ithaca concert was 9 years ago. Catch him now, accompanied by bassist Mike Burd.

Tickets are available at Ludgate Farm Market, Ithaca Guitar Works, Greenstar Co-op, Small World Music, Bound for Glory, and, if any are left, at the door. You may also order tickets online and by mail: SASE to CFSC, PO Box 481, Ithaca, NY 14851.
