Christopher Shaw opens the Cornell Folk Song Society's fall concert season with gusto. Hailing from the Adirondacks, Chris is a singer and storyteller steeped in the traditions of Northern New York State.

He's the genuine article--his songs grow from the real-life experiences of rural working people who ply their trades much as they would have in the 19th century--but he brings a fresh and contemporary approach to his music. His lyrics and delivery are infusd with good will and a healthy dose of humor. Built like a lumberjack, Chris is a masterful guitar stylist whose fingers can work delicate magic. His voice is a powerful baritone perfectly matched to his material. It has been said, "If the Adirondacks have a voice, it would sound like Chris Shaw."

Chris's whole-hearted approach to life gives him a special ability to entertain young and old alike. Perhaps his insight into the oddities of human nature started when he was very young. There are not many of us around who can claim to have grown up on a working Lake Champlain steamboat. Open water, deep woods, isolation, and strong community are among his themes. Some of his stories are unquestionably true, but others are cleverly stretched, again following regional traditions: Native American legends, French Canadian loggers' plaints, fish tales, and the like.

Chris Shaw weaves these rich, timeless stories between and within songs with mesmerizing skill. Join the Cornell Folk Song Society in giving him a rousing welcome.

Tickets are available at Ludgate Farm Market, Ithaca Guitar Works, Greenstar Co-op, Small World Music, Bound for Glory, and, if any are left, at the door. You may also order tickets online and by mail: SASE to CFSC, PO Box 481, Ithaca, NY 14851.
