Andy Cohen and Larkin Bryant in Concert
No, they are not household names, but you won't find a more musically rewarding evening this season than at the Andy Cohen and Larkin Bryant concert hosted by the Cornell Folk Song Club. Exploring old Southern music in the widest and most eclectic of its definitions, Andy and Larkin will likely play in a variety of traditions including old time, Piedmont blues, gospel, Appalachian ballads, ragtime, yodeling, and maybe even some swing and hambone. They are performers who can fill the stage with a multitude of instruments, including some you haven't seen or heard before. They have both been playing for more than 30 years and have earned their titles "queen of the Appalachian dulcimer" and "guru of American blues." Andy was a disciple of the late Rev. Gary Davis and, following his mentor, Andy has become perhaps the leading master of the old-time blues and ragtime guitar today. His singing is joyously unrestrained and enthusiastic, and his musicianship matches, as well as anyone living today, both the nature and style of the old blues artists. Larkin Bryant is best known as a teacher of the mountain dulcimer. "Larkin's Dulcimer Book" has remained the leading dulcimer instruction book for beginners and intermediates since it was first published in 1982. She has taught at countless workshops and was featured at Pinewoods last year. She is also an excellent player. In performance she gently fills the stage with her warmth and friendly manner. Together, Andy and Larkin create a unique sound that merges their distinct musical backgrounds with a virtuoso musicianship that is both simple and exquisite.
