Capercaillie
Capercaillie

Local ornithologists know the Capercaillie as a large European Black Grouse, threatened in much of its range, with a resonant mating call. Celtic music lovers know it as a Scottish band, both driving and haunting, solidly grounded in tradition, with a profound understanding of Gaelic music that is as rare as the band's namesake.

The core band consists of heavenly voiced Karen Matheson, considered the finest living Gaelic singer; Donald Shaw, innovative keyboardist and All-Britain Accordion Champion; Charlie McKerron, acclaimed Scots fiddler and composer; and Manus Lunny, skilled Donegal singer, instrumentalist, and composer, who also performs with the likes of Andy Stewart and Phil Cunningham.

Building on traditional roots, Capercaillie has also discovered a powerful synergy with world music. Helping to create this dynamic fusion in Ithaca will be C. Beresford and D. Robertson on percussion, M. McGoldrick on flute, and E. Vernal on bass.

Billboard calls them "the most exciting and vibrant band in Celtic music today." They have produced 8 albums since their founding in 1984, as well as fruitful collaborations with other respected musicians on stage, in film, and in the recording studio. Although they tour to rave response around the globe, they seldom appear in the U.S., so catch them this time through.

Special thanks to La Tourelle for donating accommodations for this "big band."

Tickets are available at Ithaca Guitar Works, Colophon Books (formerly Borealis Bookstore), Greenstar Co-op, Small World Music, Bound for Glory, and, if any are left, at the door. You may also order tickets online and by mail from CFSC, PO Box 481, Ithaca, NY 14851.
