When: Saturday and Sunday, August 15 and 16, 1998
10am to 5pm
Where: Genesee Country Vilage
1410 Flint Hill Road
Mumford, NY
How Much: $11 / $9.50 seniors / $6.50 youth

Hundreds of solo performers, budding young fiddlers, and fiddle groups get it together for the region's largest traditional string music festival, Genesee Country Village and Museum's 18th Annual Fiddlers' Fair.

The fair features more than just genuine old-time fiddling. Singers, traditinal music clubs, and other instrumentalists on harps, banjos, hammered dulcimers, and other stringed instruments also perform in a series of programs, jam sessions, and workshops. Music styles will range from Celtic to traditional North American. Two tents and an exhibition hall feature non-stop music, usually with a new performer every ten minutes.

There will be special workshops for adults and children in fiddling and the hammered dulcimer. Each day will conclude with a square dance workshop. An old-fashioned barn dance takes place Saturday evening.

Call Grace Lazzara, 716.538.6822 for more information.

[The press release doesn't mention it, but you can visit the village when you take a break from the music. Last time I went there, it was an extra fee, but worth it. Also, performers get a refund on festival admission; not bad for ten minutes on stage. -ed.]
